Dear Kindergarten Families,
Welcome to an exciting kindergarten school year! I hope that this packet answers many of your questions regarding our kindergarten class and policies.
COMMUNICATION/PLANNERS:
I can be contacted either before or after school for any questions or concerns. The easiest way to reach me during the school day is through e-mail.
Planners will be sent home daily. Please use the front pocket of the planner to send important papers, money, etc…… You can also write messages on the date page of the planner. I will check the planners daily. If you are sending money or checks to school, please put it into an envelope with your child’s name and label it with what the money is for. Thank you!
I will not check inside your child’s backpack for notes. Each student will be responsible for giving me their planner each morning upon their arrival at school.
DAILY SUBJECTS AND ACTIVIES: Each day we will work on Reading, Math, Phonics, Handwriting, Science, and Social Studies. Assignments and activities will be completed as a class, in small groups, or individually. The students will also go to P.E., music, art, library and computers each week. Our specials schedule is as follows:
Monday-P.E. and Music
Tuesday-P.E. and Art
Wednesday-P.E. and Computer
Thursday-Library, P.E., and Computer
Friday-P.E.
HOMEWORK: I will not be sending homework home in Kindergarten. I suggest that you make flashcards (alphabet, numbers, and sight words) and work with your child to review these concepts regularly. Reading with your child each night is another extremely important and fun activity! I will send home paper “little books” for you to practice reading with your child.
LUNCH: We will eat lunch at 11:00 each day. School hot lunches cost $2.75 and include milk. Milk can be purchased separately for 50 cents. You can pay online by setting up an account on the Big Hollow website. If you choose to send cash or a check, please make sure it is in an envelope labeled with your child’s name and class, as well as, what the money is for.
SNACK TIME: Students will be given time each day to eat a healthy snack during class. Each student will be responsible for bringing in his/her own snack. Our snack time will take place in the afternoon, because our lunch will be early at 11:00. I ask that you pack your child’s snack separately from his/her lunch so that it does not get eaten at lunch time. Also, please only send water to drink for snack. It is the easiest to clean up when it spills.
CLOTHING: Accidents do happen. Please have your child bring an extra set of clothing to school in case there is an accident. If possible, please put the extra clothing into a gallon size Ziploc bag with your child’s name clearly labeled on the outside. Also, please remember when buying clothing, shoes, and boots to consider whether your child will be able to dress himself/herself. Please practice dressing at home, especially outerwear, so that your child does not have to depend on help from an adult. At school we only have only one adult to 23 children and time spent dressing is time spent away from fun and important classroom activities.
EARLY DISMISSALS: We will have early dismissals on the first and third Friday of each month. Primary and Elementary students will be dismissed at 1:15. We will have our regular lunchtime on these days. We will also have snack time in the afternoon on these days.
DISMISSAL: Please remember to notify the school office by 2:15 if your child’s going home procedure will be different for the day.
Please feel free to communicate with me about any concerns or questions you may have. Communication between home and school is very important. I appreciate you taking time and giving support to your child’s educational growth. This year will be a fun learning experience for your child!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Hastings
